This simple building in a remote rural setting is a response to a unique brief for an artist's workshop. With the local natural environment, specifically trees, informing artworks, a close relationship with immediate surroundings is essential. The building allows the flexibility of working as part of the wooded field, or enclosed in more inhospitable weather. Sustainability and self-reliancy are key principles underpinning detailed design.
Walls and sliding doors would all be locally-sourced timber, and natural materials used as far as possible elsewhere, and to provide distinct characters to each internal space. This unique nature of this project involves numerous planning issues, and The Architects were successful on appeal for a similar building on same site. The proposed new project will incorporate living areas to allow the building to exist as a house as well as studio.
